Protected areas-spaces of contemporary archeology. Interventions of cultural and economic innovation in Lazio Natural Parks

The natural heritage, the biodiversity, the niches of local culture present within the natural parks of the Lazio Region are now considered a collective value recognized. Considering this factors it seems possible to start a new phase of research in which the parks are interpreted as "innovative" laboratories of knowledge and production. Parks can be realistically imagined as concrete examples of (dynamic) equilibrium between internal and external economies, between residents and guests, including local cultures and expanded exchanges: vital and popular territories, where the segmentation of the interventions is finally overcome in favor of actions that tend to strengthen new connections between forward-looking environmental resources, historical, cultural and socio-economic.

The general objective of this research is to consider traces and archaeological finds as the main theme for innovative projects that can expand and qualify the offer of regional parks in terms of culture, environment and economy.

The specific objectives that pursues research are summarized as follows:

  • Outline a system of archaeological landscapes from parks and reserves of the Lazio Region.
  • The territories of the parks of the Lazio region often coincide with extraordinary ancient territories: infrastructures, protohistoric, Etruscan, republican, imperial and late medieval settlements and connections, form, as a whole - as systems and not as isolated elements - a common resistant thread for the discovery of a park, a fascinating and yet understandable dimension.
  • Locate different and complementary archaeological Landscapes. The aim of the research was not to propose a catalog of sites (already known) but to make kelp significant stratifications that bind the more distant history to the mutations of environments, economies and territorial organizations, providing stimuli for the understanding of continuity and fractures. The reading of the layers and their relationship has allowed us to identify those steps that have strongly influenced a particular territory, and to focus on the interconnection between historical events and environmental assets, bond that characterized the "reading" and the narration of the story within individual parks. The recognition of the regional archaeological landscapes and their key life stages, and construction was therefore aimed at the development of a unified story of the historical-evolution. The system of their permanences was assumed as a matrix for the definition of the contemporary and future of the territory.
  • Propose innovative project ideas. The research is aimed at the development of innovative project proposals. It is obviously not the traditional form of the archaeological park suitable reference, but not the single arrangement of artifacts lost in the "vacuum" of the countryside, but rather to landscape projects reversible, functional and easy to implement, with a high degree in flexibility ' public use and coordinated with measures in favor of natural biodiversity and agriculture. The projects, products in the first two phases of work and reduced to their "essence proactive," represented the indispensable basis for the development of specific guidelines, supporting actions in the service of possible actuators. The guidelines have not been so designed like a catalog of generic recommendations but as a design strategy defined by a sequence of actions ordered.
